Christmas and Proteas..

Yay, it's Christmas time.. only seven more sleeps to go! We had a plan to be in the US for Xmas this year but what with one thing and another (and a bit of drama, yay drama!) it didn't happen. So, a Hong Kong Christmas it is then.

It feels quiet sitting in our flat on Lamma Island, away from the shopping malls and people, the Christmas decorations and mad shopping. I think I will have to “go in” and get a dose soon.  BUT on the plus side of being here in Hong Kong I have more time to paint and finish off a commission that has been patiently waiting for me to pull it out again after a break. I have been traveling and it was put aside for a while with only days to go till its completion.

This one, a Leucospermum cordifolium from the Proteas family was .. complicated to say the least.  A major problem was looking up at the subject and trying to find the area you were just looking at!   I think this is why rather than painting in one layer all over the flower then going back with the second etc I finished each “spot” before moving onto the next.  Just a way of not constantly having to find where I was all the time.

I am in love with this group of flowers. I think of them as the anti-flower ..in a good way!  I love the fact that they don’t have large delicate petals like most flowers but dramatic spikes (the Style and Stigma) that give it an alien look and are very geometric and strong in design.  I was looking at this family of plants before this commission came along and happily my clients liked my suggested topic!

So, here we are, mostly done with a few more painting days to go ..I wonder which will arrive first, the finished painting or Christmas.

Almost done..
